A natural treasure of Ordino

A natural treasure of Ordino

The Sorteny Natural Park, located in the north of Andorra, is one of the country’s most valuable and iconic natural areas. Created in 1999, this park spans over 1.000 hectares and offers a rich ecological diversity, both in terms of flora and fauna. It is an ideal destination for nature lovers, hikers, and those seeking peace and tranquility.

One of Sorteny’s most remarkable features is its biodiversity. Over 700 plant species grow here, many of them endemic to the Pyrenees or known for their medicinal and traditional uses. During the spring and summer months, the park becomes a colorful spectacle thanks to the blooming alpine meadows, and visitors can discover species such as Gentian, Edelweiss, and Ramonda. The park also features a high-mountain botanical garden, offering a closer look at this rich plant life.

As for wildlife, Sorteny is home to emblematic Pyrenean species. Marmots, reintroduced a few years ago, have adapted well to the environment. Other species include chamois, foxes, roe deer, wild boars, and, with a bit of luck, the capercaillie. With some patience and silence, it’s not uncommon to enjoy brief moments of wildlife observation that make the visit even more special. Some anecdotes from guides and visitors tell of marmots approaching the trails, curious about humans and the smell of sandwiches.

The park offers various marked trails for all levels. There are easy, accessible routes for families, as well as more demanding hikes, such as the ascent to Pic de l’Estanyó, which reaches 2.915 meters and offers spectacular views of the Andorran valleys and peaks. Moreover, although it’s a natural space, Sorteny also preserves traces of human activity: old shepherds’ paths, traditional mountain huts, dry stone walls, and local legends that connect the landscape with the region’s history.

The park completely changes its appearance with the seasons. In spring and summer, everything is dressed in greens and vibrant colors, while in autumn, the forests fill with golden and ochre tones. In winter, snow covers everything and opens the door to activities such as snowshoe hikes or guided tours to discover the park’s winter wildlife.

Sorteny is not just a protected area; it’s also a place to connect with the slow rhythm of the mountains, to learn, observe, and enjoy silence. A place where nature reveals itself with strength, but also with harmony. Ideal for both those looking for a quiet day in nature and those who want to explore and discover new landscapes with every step.
