When the mist slowly descends over the mountains of Ordino and silence covers the forests of Llorts, it becomes easy to understand why so many stories and legends were born in this corner of the Pyrenees over the centuries.
Andorra is not only about snow, nature, and spectacular landscapes. It is also a land filled with ancient tales passed down from generation to generation — stories of mysterious lakes, hidden creatures in the forests, and mountains that seem to guard secrets from centuries ago.
Very close to Llorts, surrounded by peaks and mountain paths, are some of the most magical and enigmatic places in the country. Especially the Tristaina lakes, where one of the oldest legends of the Pyrenees was born: the story of the “dones d’aigua”, the women of the water.
According to ancient traditions, they were magical beings of extraordinary beauty who appeared through the mist near lakes and mountain rivers. Shepherds claimed to have seen them at dawn, silently walking beside the water or disappearing into the mountains whenever someone tried to approach them.
It was said that they protected nature and helped those who respected the mountains, while punishing arrogant or greedy people. Even today, when clouds cover the lakes of Ordino and silence surrounds the landscape, it is easy to imagine how these legends came to life.
But Andorran legends do not end there.
Among the forests of Ordino also lives the Tamarro, one of the most curious and beloved creatures of Andorran folklore. Legend describes it as a small, shy being, almost impossible to see, hiding among the trees and protecting the mountain forests.
For generations, travellers and locals spoke of strange footsteps, movements in the mist, or shadows disappearing among the pine trees. Over time, the Tamarro became one of the most cherished symbols of Andorra and remains part of local culture today.
Perhaps what makes these legends so special is that they were born in real places. Forests, paths, lakes, and mountains that can still be explored today and that continue to preserve the peaceful and mysterious atmosphere so characteristic of Ordino.
Here, nature is not only observed. It is felt.
The sound of the river, the pure mountain air, the ancient paths, and the silence of the forests make it easy to disconnect from everyday life and reconnect with a more authentic, slower, and deeply rooted Andorra.
And perhaps that is why those who visit Llorts and the Ordino valley experience something difficult to explain: the feeling of being in a place where the mountains still preserve a little magic.
