Estripagecs are forged iron bars with irregular spikes pointing sideways, traditionally placed on the windows, balconies and doors of mountain homes in the Pyrenees and Andorra. Their name comes from the Pyrenean Catalan words “estripa” (to tear) and “gecs” (jackets), referring to the idea that these metal spikes could “tear the clothes” of thieves or intruders trying to break into the homes.
While they served as a real physical barrier or railing, their main role was dissuasive — and often carried magical or superstitious meaning: they were also seen as protective talismans, warding off evil spirits or bad luck.
Estripagecs originated in the traditional architecture of the Pyrenees. They began appearing between the 18th and 19th centuries, when wrought ironwork became widespread and local blacksmiths started incorporating decorative designs into functional household elements.
Over time, estripagecs have become a cultural and symbolic emblem of Andorra, especially in villages like Ordino where they are still visible today. And it is precisely the Mayor of Ordino that, in recent years, has revived this symbol through an inspiring and creative initiative.
With the project “Estripagecs al vent” (“Estripagecs in the Wind”), the Mayor has installed replicas of these elements on six of the highest peaks in the parish, including Casamanya, Serrera and Estanyó. These sculptures, created by artist Pere Moles, blend art and nature, and invite visitors to rediscover Andorra’s cultural heritage from above.
The project has a dual purpose: to honour local history and beliefs, and to promote respect for the mountains, sport and exploration of the territory in a symbolic and participatory way. A hiking challenge was also launched, encouraging tourists and locals alike to reach these peaks and share their experiences on social media.
Thus, the estripagecs have evolved from mere architectural elements of the past into silent guides — speaking from the mountaintops about the strength of a culture that refuses to lose its connection to history.
